Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

In recent years there has been a heated debate as to if the action movie Die Hard is a Christmas movie. But how can a movie with guns, explosions, helicopters and plenty of bad guys ever be a Christmas movie? Well, we are here to answer that question for you.

Let’s start with the obvious. Die Hard has way too many Christmas references to ignore. The movie takes place right around Christmas so most scenes you will see some kind of decorations. The original trailer for the movie starts out with the song “Let It Snow.” John McClane’s wife, Holly even has a holiday themed name. Why wouldn’t this be a Christmas movie? Still not a believer? Then let’s continue.

If you take a look at the search trends on Google, you will notice a spike in searches for Christmas movies. When looking at Die Hard, you will also see similar trends right around holiday time, showing a sharp increase from November into December and then a sharp drop in January. Here at Someone’s Bad Idea, we don’t argue with numbers.

If you absolutely don’t want to take it from us (we put graphs in this post so we’re pretty official), then why not take it straight from the horses mouth. In 2018, 20th Century Fox released a trailer for the film’s 30th anniversary. We don’t want to tell you what they said so we’ll let you just watch for yourself.
